Yes and I finally found a dentist who understands this very well and worked with me. I am know not freaked out when they numb me. I also bring my Dell DJ and turn the music up to occupy my mind.

Hey im here to reassure you! I went to the dentist for the first time this morning in 14 years. I had a huge phobia I was put of for life. I was terrified when I heard I needed a filling and deep clean. However I went and had it done without any numbing. I told them about my phobia and they made me very welcome and comfortable and went step by step on what they would be doing. It all started after I was put to sleep to have a toooth out when I was 8 years out. It scared me that much I never went again. Be brave. You can do this, remember they can't force you, just go and have a chat and see how you feel

I'm a dental phobic; I can definitely sympathize. I highly recommend going to a dentist who uses nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") while working. You will be a LOT more relaxed.

Sleep dentistry - where they "knock you out" to do the work, you wake up, and it is all done.
