I heard of cats having a raw food diet, and I'm sure its a strict every day diet. I'm only interested in giving her somthing like raw salmon or tuna as a treat once or twice a month. At this time, she eats about 8 onces of healthy canned food a day.

It's a good idea to feed your cat raw fish as well as raw meat. In the wild they only eat raw food, that's normal. Go for it. She's a lucky cat to have you as an owner.

PS. Raw fish is good for there gums and teeth.

That's Fine! Everytime I Open A Can Of Salmon Or Tuna With A Canopener, Both Of My Cats Come Running For Some - All I Do Is Just Strain Out The Juice From The Can - Put It On A Plate (The Juice) With A Little Bit Of The Tuna/Salmon, And I Give It To Them!! They Usually Fight Over It!!

I Don't Do It Too Often Though - Like, Every 2 Or 3 Weeks... They Luv It!!

As long as the fish is really fresh a little is OK. If you have doubts and you wouldn't eat it raw then don't give to your cat. To be honest they probably will enjoy it more cooked cause it smells great. As far as the comment about it giving cats FUS is not true. They believe it is the Ash content in certain dry foods that cause FUS. Cats are obligate carnivores and only need meat to survive so a little fish is great for you cat but i would be more inclined to give it cook just to make sure of the bugs.

Remember thought either cook it in water or grill it, cats should not have oil or fatty products.

It is hard to believe the truth in the forums sometimes so please takes peoples comments loosely ask your local vet if you are unsure the people who answer the phone are only to happy to help. And they are qualified.

um, I would hesitate to give your cat fresh raw fish. Not only will it probably do a number on your cat's belly as she's used to foods that are fully cooked, but you should be concerned about any bones that are left in. That's the number one reason that it is suggested that one doesn't feed fish to pets because the tiny bones can be missed and even though you or I would just pick them out if we found them in our dinner, cat's can't do it and can end up choking on it. You can, however, go to places like trader joes and buy cat tuna, which the cats go crazy for!

I would say that this is okay. Raw food in small quantities is acceptable. I wouldnt not reccomend switching to a raw food diet. There is some chance of food-bourne illness. But i think that once or twice a month would to absolutely acceptable.

Believe it or not fish of any kind is not good for a cat. I don't know why they make fish flavored cat food. Ask any vet and they'll tell you. If you give a cat fish they are at a high risk of developing FUS (feline urinary tract syndrome). Crystals form in their urine and they can't pass urine easily. It's more common in male cats and is terribly painful for them. Some males have to have surgery to correct the problem and others can be controlled by a special diet like Science Diet CD or KD. My advice to you would be not to feed her any fish at all.
