No. It partly depends on the food. Some foods are marked with a "sell by" date and a "use or freeze by" date. Stores must have the food off the shelf after the "sell by" date has passed. I have had milk keep fine a week or more after the expiration date, I have also had it go bad before the expiration date. I just depends on the food. Always use some foods within a couple of days of opening or they will not be safe regardless of the date - bacon and hot dogs come to mind. You can freeze a food for several weeks past the "use by" date and it will be safe to use once thawed, although you will not want to keep it after it has been thawed for a couple of days - and not cooked.
Check out the link below to an article about expiration dates from the October 2006 BusinessWeek online. I think it will help explain.

No, it is not ALWAYS bad. It depends on the product. The sale date is when the store is supposed to stop selling it. Depending on the product, you can usually consume the product up to a week after unless it is something perishable, like milk. Then I suggest only 2 days after and then you need to go by how it tastes. It should still be good 3 days after but I would not go any longer. You don't want to get sick eating bad food.

No, most foods are good for a few days or even a week after the due date. With something like chicken I would not eat after due date. I have had eggs that were a month past recommended date and they were perfectly OK. A lot of things, just smell or tasting will tell you if its no good. Chips start to taste a little stale, but could be ate long after the due date if you don't mind stale taste. So part of determining is taste and using common sense.

No, not all foods are bad by the sale by date. Dairy, meat are the ones you want to avoid buying if there sale by dates have already expired.

terrific in the previous dates have little which skill, and don't point out any possibility if the nutrition is eaten after that date: all that could ensue is that flavours could shrink slightly, or colorings could substitute. They rae many times on dried ot tinned/bottles produce, lots of which will final for an prolonged time - human beings have opened one hundred year previous tins of meat and located that they are completely greater healthful to be eaten, in spite of if no longer very appetising. Use by using dates are a secure practices factor, and besides the actuality that the do have incredibly of leeway in them you won't choose to furnish a infant nutrition (particularly meat or dairy) previous the use by using date. sell by using dates are some save's inventory administration - they are designed to verify the save gets them off the cabinets in the previous they grow to be too previous to be bought.

No, if it has been properly stored it is good for a while after the date. For how long depends on the food. Milk is good for a couple of days. Frozen food for a couple of weeks/month.

There is usually an additional shelf life of 2-5 days, depending on the product.
