Why? I'm most interested in which would be the best for a family, outings, etc.

Both are good companies and make good vehicles. In this case, I'm going to have to say 4Runner. Why? It has a longer history and is a tried-and-true performer. The pilot is a newer model, so I would recommend wait a few more years for any bugs to get worked out. If all else fades, test drive both vehicles. There's also the Rav4 with the new V6 engine and that thing really moves! Good luck.

Pilot has a more flexible interior and a lower floor.

4Runner is more biased towards people who will actually take it off-road.

The best for family, outings etc. would not be an SUV at all. I recommend you take a good look at the Honda Odyssey van. Sure minivans may not be quite as "sexy" as SUV's but they offer much better interior room and comfort, safer handling, better fuel economy and they are easier to drive and get in and out of. Much more sensible choice and you can even get AWD with the Honda van if you really need it.

Be honest with yourself, if you aren't going to be driving your family across the prairies and up a mountain every weekend then you owe it to yourself to give the Odyssey a good hard look. It's the best van on the market right now.

I'm a single guy without a family and I'm impressed enough with it that I would seriously consider one if I could afford it.
