Technically any five-pointed star drawn with five straight lines can be considered a pentagram (a pentagram is formed in the middle of the star).

In literal usage, a pentacle is an amulet that's used in magical evocation, and may or may not have markings on it. Historically you will see pentacles with five-pointed stars, six-pointed stars, or no stars on them.

In common usage today, a pentacle is a pentagram with a circle circumscribing it, and is a common symbol used by Wiccans and other Neo-Pagans. Wiccans usually wear their pentacles with a single point upwards (however this can vary depending on the Tradition and level of the Wiccan).
