I have read that in other countries babies are usually potty trained by their first year. Does anyone know how to potty train a 10 month old boy? He can stand, but I'm willing to start him off by sitting, he can always learn to stand and pee later.

omg....that is way to young!

he has to be able to understand the signs of needing to pee first!..he can't do that yet.

most kids are not even near ready until the age 2..and that is a younger age for it. They have to be ready cognitive to be able to do this

You don't. I have two boys and both were around 2 years before they were potty trained. In fact the younger was close to 3. Kids will be ready when they are ready and there is little you can do to rush it. It is very rare for a 10 month old to be potty trained. You could do a lot of harm to the child by forcing this.

Some parents swear by a method called "elimination communication." The idea is that, if your child is predictable at all about his elimination needs, you can pay close attention to all the signs, and whisk him off to the bathroom when he needs to go.

But it isn't really potty training; it's more like "parent training." And it's a method that doesn't work for many parents, especially parents who work outside the home.

General pediatric wisdom is that most kids aren't really ready for potty training until they're closer to 2--and some even later. It's not even worth trying until he a) is able to recognize that he has to go and can give you some warning; and b) wakes up from naps with a dry diaper. Until then, he doesn't have the bladder or bowel control to do what you want him to.

Very simple answer, you don't!

The child has to be able to recognize that he needs the potty and have conscious control over his body before you can do anything. That is unlikely at 10 months. If you try to start before the child is ready, you will do far more harm than good and may even cause the desired result to be delayed by years.

Every child is different, but there will come a time when he is ready and you will know it. It will become apparent that he knows what is about to happen and can exercises some control over it. That is the time to start. If you start too early, he will have no idea what you are going on about and you will both become frustrated.

Potty training should start only when the child starts giving you clues that they are ready. Telling you they have to go, willingness and wanting to sit on the potty...and so on. I highly doubt (not to say it is not possible) that a 10 month old is any where near ready to potty train. He/She has WAY better things to do. Relax and enjoy your BABY, because that is what he still is.

It is best to wait for the child to show interest in potty training before forcing it on them. If the child reaches the age of 2 and still doesn't show interest, you should start to potty train.

It isn't potty training per se it is parent training.

It is also called "elimination communication" and "natural infant hygene".

Basically the parent/caregiver learns the signs that the baby needs to go and takes them to the potty and signals them to go.

This is different than potty training which requires a child to know when they need to go and hold it until they get to a washroom, even if that is going to be in 10 minutes.

Google it and find out more.

Don't start until 1-1/2 years old. That's really the recommended age. You really won't get results until then...

Apparently Dr. Phil's website has something on it that can potty train a child in one day... go check it out.

you don't, unless you want an emotionally scarred 10 month old. the 10 month old has not yet figued out that he/she has absolutely anything to do with his/her pants suddenly being wet or dirty. bowel and bladder function are not yet under his/her control.

the old adage is "if you really work at it, you can potty train a child by 2 years of age. If you just let them go until they are ready, it will probably be about 24 months."

You really shouldn't potty train a child under 1 year old!
