Smores, hot dogs, corn on the cob.....as long as it isn't greasy so the fire doesn't flair up. You should be cooking with untreated wood, not gas or treated wood.

Well, I'm a caveman ... I grew up in the Alaskan outback cooking various beasts and the occasional tourist over an open fire. I'm assuming you mean a wood fire, no treated wood, pellets, or the like. What works best is to make a pretty good size fire and let it burn down where the flames aren't real high, but there is a lot of heat comming off the coals. At Walmart, or any outdoors store you can get various poles with differing types of holders on the end for food. You could do steak, fish, veggies and/or meat on a cabbob. Food over an open fire taste better as long as you don't char it too badly. Experiment with different types of wood. If at all you can find it, use alder wood ... nothing better. Experiment ... you wont regret it.

You don't say wood or gas. Other than marshmallows, I've never cooked anything in our fireplace. Just doesn't seem like it would be the best place to cook.
