Nope--you shouldn't get your dog from a pet store. Many pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills, which are horrible. Check out this website and video: http://www.stoppuppymills.org/
You should get your dog from your local animal shelter. There are so many wonderful dogs and puppies at the shelters, and they are so much cheaper than buying them from breeders or pet stores. We got our puppy at our local animal shelter. She cost $75, which covered the costs of updated vaccinations and getting her spayed. She's so healthy, fun, and loving.
You can find local animal shelters and adoptable pets here: http://www.petfinder.com/
It's really special when you can "rescue" a dog from a shelter. Wherever you get your dog, enjoy him/her! They're wonderful.

If you really want a pure bred puppy, i would advise against the pet stores. They charge a ridiculous amount of money, and usually they dogs come from puppy mills, and are not healthy. You will not have any insight into the parents, and really have no idea what you are getting. I would suggest going to a breeder in which you can meet the people who cared for them the first few weeks of their life, see the environment, and socialize with the parents and littermates.
Remember, if you do not have your heart set on a specific breed, i highly suggest visiting local shelters or the humane society. So many great dogs out there really need good homes.

Don't buy a dog. Adopt a dog that needs a home. There are millions of dogs, many of them purebred, who have been abandoned by the people they love and need a second chance. Shelters also have puppies and younger dogs too, but do your research first.
Learn about the different breeds and which one would fit best into your lifestyle. Then visit different shelters and meet the dogs that they have... you will know the right one when you see him!
If you absolutely have to buy a dog, I strongly discourage pet stores. While most pet stores have breeders documented as having supplied the puppy, you'll notice that many of the breeders listed are from different states. No reputable breeder would be willing to subject their puppies to hours to uncomfortable travel just to be sold at a pet store. These breeders act almost as assembly lines for puppies, and while the puppy may be less expensive at a store, you really get what you pay for.
Research is the most important part of any big decision like this, so do your homework!

Your best bet? First go to www.akc.org and learn all you can about general dog care and get a feel of what kind of dog you are looking for, as the have a fun quiz to help you pick a breed. If you MUST have a purebred dog, they have a list of reputable breeders that you can look through and contact.
There are many homeless dogs that need a good home, so if you like something about a particular breed you can search for it on www.petfinder.com and find a dog in a shelter near you that needs a home.
If this is your first dog, your much better off starting with an adult dog, not a puppy. Your local shelter can help you more.

I'm with the people who say NO to the petstore. even if you get lucky ...really lucky, I worked for vets and saw sick puppy after sick puppy come from petstores :( .... you are still suporting the cruel puppy mills and petstores if you buy there. I personally wont buy a squeeky toy in a pet store that sells dogs.
i also agree with the people saying to adopt, but if you have you heart set on a buying a purebred puppy...do your reseach. ask your local vet. many have "breeder directory" booklets that list breeders who belong to breed clubs ...ask for reference for other who have gotten puppies from the breeder, and ask to see all their dogs and kennel..if they give you a hard time, leave. know the breed you are looking at and ask to see health checks on the parents. if anything seems fishy leave. ...and remeber the LAW says you have a right to expect a healthy dog and you have (usally 10 days to 2 weeks depending on where you are) to get them checked out by a vet.

don't buy from a petstore. they get their puppies from well you don't know. mostly backyard breeder and puppy mills. if you want a healthy puppy, don't buy from a petstore. they will promise you a health guarantee, that they never honor. a petstore's only guarantee is a lifetime of problems for the puppy and the owner. go to the local humane society, there are many puppies to choose from and the staff there can direct you to the one that fits your lifestyle and personality. they also will give you great tips on how to care for a dog. good luck.

Never buy a puppy from a petstore. They are puppy mill pups and not healthy!!! Ask the local vets for breeder references. They know of breeders in the area and know if they are good breeders or bad ones.

Adopt a puppy. Rescue centers do vet exams on their animals before putting them up for adoption, and usually give them their necessary shots in advance. Some humane societies even have a vet that just works in their facility. You will get honest info on the animal's medical background and they'll save you time and money by giving the puppy its shots and spaying/neutering it.

If you don't care about a breed, go to your local animal shelter.
It's inexpensive and you're saving the puppy's life.
If you want a particular breed, look for a local breeder that's associated with the American Kennel Club.
