Whenever he's around, look around and ask the general public "god, do you smell b.o.?!". That way he can do whatever he wants at the moment to realize it's him and back away casually, and hopefully he'll go home and try to prevent it for the future. Maybe you should do it more than once, and in different spots arounf different groups of people, if he doesn't get it.

Go up and say can i talk to you..(make sure you two are alone...less offending)....and say your a great guy and im not being mean, but sometimes you have a little B.O...then just kinda smile and walk away!

Maybe you can talk about a cologne you want to buy for a guy...and then ask him which one he wears...then tell him he sometimes smells wierd...good luck...lol.
