When starting my final year of high school, my school had arranged for the final year students to spend 2 days in various conferences and smaller learning groups in hope of preparing them and offering them some advice for final year studies.
One thing we had a conference on was efficient ways of learning and something suggested to us was to study for no more than an hour and than take a 20minute break. And when you go back to study after that go onto a new topic that way you won't become bored with just 1 strand of learning. The break helps to consolidate what you have been studying so that you won't be overloaded with too much information at once.

A 2-min break after every 15 minutes of uninterrupted study. 15-min after 2 hours. Max study 4 hours per day (not including school).

I have read that recent studies say that you should study in short durations to retain the most information. They say 20 mins at a time will help. I don't know how realistic that is for a kid who may have several hours of HW to do, but I did read that recently.
