When you get to creating partitions, delete all existing partitions and install on a raw drive that you will format next in the process. You will be warned that you are deleting your OS, so make sure you backup files that you need. Documents, etc.

You can boot up to a DOS prompt and type "format C:"
You will get a warning window saying, "Are you sure?"
Answer yes and the format will begin. This will totally wipe the drive clean.

Perhaps a better option:
If you know the brand or maker of your hard drive, they normally (especially older systems like it appears you have) have Utility programs free to download that will format as well as install some nice troubleshooting tools if you continue to have problems. These are available free at the manufacturer's site. Be prepared to know the Drive make and model and sometimes even the Serial number. You can get this off the drive itself, it is printed on the top side of the drive.

Once you install XP from the original disc you will have to update your Windows all over again, so be prepared to spend some time! :)

I hope you have scanned your computer for spyware, malware, adware and viruses if you have been having problems with the operating system. It might save having to format and reload.

first you don't have to write zeros unless you want to sell or gift your pc. the simplest way as i guess you are a newbie at this is to insert your xp cd and follow the instructions. it will ask you if you want to format or keep current file system. answer accordingly. remember if you format you lose your stuff so if need any stuff be sure to save it externally prior to doing this. if you need help and to be walked tho' the install process there's many help sites (known as forums) where people do that for free. i can recommend the one i use its below-just do a simple registration and you can search tutorials or post your questions. you'll find the folks over there a very helpful maybe better than the paid phone support techs.
