I have a rather large, constant debate with a certain person. They believe I'm a flighty nutball because I believe differently than they do. I'm personally of the opinion that they are a closed minded cynic (and coming from me,that's... something,me being cynical myself).

They're atheist,'science is perfect and never wrong' type. ...How do these people have any hope? Or dreams? These "realists" are the type that tell their children that luck doesn't exsist-you'll get nowhere in the world by hope or prayer and your dreams need to be 'realistic'.

How do these people survive in this sort of mentality? I can't imagine being so... horribly depressed.

Read the book Unweaving the Rainbow or anything by Carl Sagan. Should put you right.

And I'll wager you an awful lot of money that I've had more fun than you in my life.

Do you buy loads of lottery tickets and then pray that you will win?

why would a realist be depressed? everything is under their control, not some supernatural man in the sky that can easily offended.

study, learn a skill and you can have whatever you want!

Damn...reality is depressing to you?
I hope my children can appreciate the incredible sequence of events that led them to exist and love the incredible nature of the universe without needing to believe in the easter bunny...

Being grounded in reality is not depressing. I would imagine it would be more depressing to believe in a fairytale and have it questioned every day by scientific evidence.

If your friends are typical Atheists, they are comfortable, secure, happy people. Depression is no more common in Atheists than in theists. You should be asking yourself why you so desperately need to feel 'special'.

Well....everyone has their own opinion....and their own beleifs. There is not point in trying to convince people of your own opinions. That would be like them trying to convince you that there is no God. Just state your opinion and if they dont agree with it then let it go. But I can see how it would be frustrating to u.....

face it, those people are those without faith - in anything, not just religion.

Reality is a perception, and it is colored by our attitudes, hopes, dreams, and experience.
