Cali I couldnt agree with you more. He was an arrogant coward in real life. Also he was not the best ever, Sugar Ray Robinson and Marciano were better. As a country, we need to stop idolizing people like him.

He was a concientious objector. He is on a pedestal because he is idolized by alot of people like myself. Don Trollio I had to get the dictionary out for pedestal try it sometime you might like it. The stories were out because like you said it was his birthday. He was a heavyweight champ, adored around the world, I think they would have something on about him. Now you can go back and watch your hockey news. If he had gone in the draft he would have done boxing exhibitions like Louis did or play baseball like Jackie did. It was 40 years ago and a war that was a mistake. I take nothing away from the Vietnam vets they tried to do well but were in a losing situation from the beginning. Back to the question----They worship Ali because he was a great champ and is a great person.

I think he became a role model for young boys who learned that if they apply and train themselves to be the best- in any athletic arena, in something, and in anything, they can become the absolute best in the world . It is POSSIBLE.
As for the draft, well ,yes I agree that part was dicey. Ali (Cassius Clay) failed his first bid because he was almost illiterate, then at the subsequent times, used his membership in the Islam religion as a reason.
joined the Nation of Islam and subsequently converted to Sunni Islam in 1975.
---------------------------
Excerpt form his biography in WIlkepedia:
In 1964, Ali failed the Armed Forces qualifying test because his writing and spelling skills were subpar. However, in early 1966, the tests were revised and Ali was reclassified 1A. He refused to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a conscientious objector, because "War is against the teachings of the Holy Qur'an. I'm not trying to dodge the draft. We are not supposed to take part in no wars unless declared by Allah or The Messenger. We don't take part in Christian wars or wars of any unbelievers." Ali also famously said, "I ain't got no quarrel with those Vietcong" and "no Vietcong ever called me neegger."

A man who gives up everything because he believes in an ideal and a principle so profoundly and wholeheartedly deserves to be honored by all of us. After all, hearts and minds that strayed against the public policy are what created and developed this country.
