Usually, I would say yes. I have a 2 year old son & he knows what a circle, triangle, square is along w/ the shape of a heart & star & knows most of the primary colors. It's really all about how we approach teaching them.. make it fun, be repetitive... my son picks up on things pretty easily... I'm sure your child already knows their shapes but maybe isn't being vocal about it...

You may want to invest in V.tech Smile Baby from Toys R. Us for only $40. It comes w/ a shapes, numbers, and colors cartridge to get your child started & you can continue to add to your collection. You'd be suprised what you child already knows!

Good luck!

most three year olds who have been taught their shapes know them, but its not a horrible thing if they haven't learned them yet. Some things, like the alphabet, shapes colors, etc. are good to introduce to your child because it starts the connection building in the brain when the tissues and neurons arent anywhere near complete. But there is a reason these basics are still on Kindergarten Curriculum : not all five year olds have learned them, and they grow up to be fine, productive young people. not knowing your shapes at three won't affect you when you're thirty.

If your three year old cant remember shapes colors, numbers, or abc's after steady work with them for two or three weeks (and remember, 'working' with a three year old should be fun, not boring and arduous" you might mention it to your doctor just in case, but you'd be suprised how many kids seem not to know things, seem to be behind in learning, and then you hear them spouting the Declaration of Independance to the cashier at Wal-Mart. They're tricky like that.

My 3 yr old does. Most 3 year olds should know at least some of their shapes, numbers, ABCs and colors. They would not necessarily know all of it, but should have a good concept of it.

My son didn't even really talk at age 3. He is 4 and a half now and just learned shapes but refuses to learn ABC or numbers.

p.s. He is not slow , just got other talents rather more technical.

My daughter did at 3, but I taught her everyday. So yes, if they are taught their shapes. Any toddler can know letters, shapes, colors, etc if someone takes the time to teach them. My daughter can already read single words. We will work on sentences soon.

kids learn at different rates. my son is 2. he knows a couple of shapes, is not the slightest bit interested in letters, gets his colors confused, but is crazy about numbers. he can count to and recognize numbers up to 13. your child will get there eventually. ive read tons of studies and articles, by first grade it pretty much all evens out.

My daughter knew them at two but she is pretty advanced. She could count to 10 by 18 months in English and Spanish and new her colors before she was two. All kids are different. My son is no where near where my daughter was at his age.

My son has known his since age 2, so I would think most 3 year olds know at least square, triangle and circle. Although it might be hard for them to distinguish square and rectangle.

If you work with them, they'll pick it up pretty quickly. I think all three of my kids knew shapes at that age.

My daughter knew them at age two...but she refused to learn to count until she was four and a half.

They all learn at different paces. If you'd like a fun, online learning activity that teaches shapes, look at the games at the fisher price website...they have a shape one that my daughter still likes to do...http://www.fisher-price.com/us/fun/games/colorshapes/default.asp
