If the company is a private one, you might locate the EIN with EIN Finder at FreeERISA. Access to FreeERISA requires registration (free). The database covers companies that have qualified retirement and welfare benefit plans. You can search by company name, and opt to limit the query by state or zip code. The search page provides tips to help you formulate a query. Once you find an EIN, connect to the U.S. Party/Case Index and conduct a TIN search.

If you do not have a company's Employer Identification Number and need to find it, there are several ways to try to locate the EIN. Public companies print the EIN on the first page of their 10-Ks, 20-Fs and other SEC filings. You can locate these documents for free through the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's EDGAR database.

Nonprofit organizations often include the EIN on the Form 990 which provides a nonprofit organization's financial information and executive names. GuideStar, which is a nonprofit organization Website, maintains a database with several organizations' Form 990. The basic GuideStar search is a free service that requires an ID (e-mail) and password to access the Form 990.

For private companies you can try looking at the company Website, a company invoice or try fee-based resources such as Westlaw (BUS-TRACK and/or FEIN-ALL) or Lexis (D&B/FEIN). In addition, KnowX, a commercial vendor, allows you to search using a FEIN and will display a list of results; however payment is required to view full details. Companies that go out of business are still required to file their W-2s with the IRS and most companies will still mail you a copy of the W-2 before the end of January, though it may be later for some companies. If not, you can try calling the local chapter of the Small Business Administration or the free IRS tax help line. In case no one can tell you the EIN number, the IRS tax line will tell you how to handle it on your taxes.

There's nothing reliable. Many large companies are conglomerates of smaller corporations with many EINs so you'd have to ask your payroll department what the EIN was for your division or department. It will be on your W-2 when you get it. You can't file without the W-2 anyway so there's no sense fretting over it now.
