Any suggestions would be helpful. I've gotten 3 different places telling me 3 different things. Is it possible to find an honest one???

I think your question is about diagnosing your car problem correctly, not about honesty, in some cases to correctly diagnose a problem some strip down may be necessary, discuss this with your mechanic and if necessary put a ceiling on how much you are prepared to spend to get to the problem. [even doctors have trouble with diagnosing problems with their patients and us humans haven't changed in thousands of years] mind you the mark of a good mechanic is his diagnostic skills

I usually ask people and friends that I know who they take there cars to and see what they say.There are a lot of people that do it on the side that are very good also and usually much cheaper.

Asking around is the best way. Also look for someone who is AAA approved....
