I'd like to preface this with: YES, I was born and bred in the U.S.A. (I find that most other people who agree that Hershey's is disgusting are from other countries, where they're used to better chocolate), but I never was able to get over Hershey's sour milk smell...

Ghiradelli's is great! I wish it had been more widely available when I was a kid. Up until I was old enough to buy my own chocolate with allowance money, I thought I only liked chocolate-flavored icecream!

I think it has to do with the waxy-ness and the quality of the chocolate itself. I appreciate Cadbury more much, both American and British!

You are correct that Hershey's chocolate is awful. The FDA barely allows them to label it "chocolate" because it contains little or no cocoa butter (Read here: http://www.today.com/id/26788143) Like most large U.S. food manufacturers, (think Campbell's horrible soup products) all they care about is profits and sales so they only produce a product "good enough" that the unwashed masses will continue to consume it. For REAL chocolate, you can't beat the wonderful Belgium chocolate products carried by Trader Joe's. The prices are very reasonable and you're getting only the ingredients that SHOULD be in quality chocolate products. Many people feel Belgium chocolate is equal to or even superior to the famous Swiss chocolate.

I only like Hershey's dark chocolate because

1 - It's pretty cheap
2 - and the dark chocolate smell and taste knock out eh sour milk smell.

I wish Ghiradelli was in as many gas stations as Hershey's was.

Ghirardelli and other gourmet chocolate is good when you're in a fancy chocolate mood and have the money, but when you're down and you need quick pick-me-up, go for Hershey's and other less expensive chocolates. (just my opinion on the question, I'm sure a bunch of people will disagree with me)

I agree it's on the lower end of chocolate, but I would hardly say that it's vile. But it is mass produced and pedestrian, even their dark chocolate is lackluster. I'm not a chocolate snob, but if I get a chocolate craving I prefer Godiva.

Hershey's chocolate has one of the highest cocoa levels in the country. Compared to very fine quality chocolate it may not measure up, but compared to many other chocolates you will find here it is much better quality.

Ugh, you're right! I never thought of it as sour milk smell, but it IS!! Sickening.

Hershey's is horrifying. It shouldn't even qualify as chocolate!

However, some people are delusional and actually enjoy its waxy, mushy, rancid flavor -- my dad's secretary cannot get enough of Hershey kisses.

What's the big deal? If you don't like Hershey's product, don't eat it! Although I prefer dark chocolates and tend to like the richer chocolates offered by european companies, I don't feel the need to "hate" on Hershey's. Different strokes for different folks...
