The physical line that used to be the IC still exists, and sees substantial use these days.

As far as the company Illinois Central, they were purchased by the Canadian National (CN) close to 10 years ago. Whatever is left of them is likely only legally required an a few pieces of leftover paper.

Yes and no.

That property that was the Illinois Central, became Illinois Central Gulf, and that entity was bought by Canadian National sometime in the 1990's.

You are correct that the lines ran from Chicago to New Orleans.

Its a fallen flag, as so many US roads are. I think we have maybe 6 or 7 large rail roads in the US now.
