Usually a lack of potassium causes charlie horses - and some medications can cause you to lose potassium at a faster rate than normal. Eat potassium rich foods, or speak with your doctor about a potassium supplement, if necessary.
To help eleviate the pain of a charlie horse while you are in mid-cramp, try running your foot over the rung of a chair, using it to massage the place where the cramp is occurring, and try to avoid pointing your toes (do you sleep on your stomach, or do your bedcovers pull/weigh your feet down? If so, you may want to consider changing sleeping positions and/or freeing the bottoms of your sheets/bedcovers). You can also try doing some gentle stretching exercises by pulling your toes back towards your chest with your hands.
If this doesn't go away fairly quickly, please consider seeing your health care provider - he or she may be able to recommend some other solutions and/or send you to a trained physical therapist to help you work through this.
I hope this helps - I wish you a good night's sleep!

Some people take calcium pills to eliminate them.....it can be caused by lack of calcium. Next scenario is, not wearing shoes that have a really good arch support. If I wear a pair of shoes that are flat and have a poor arch support or none.....I get charlie horses in my feet all night long. If this could be the case, hurry out and buy a good pair of shoe's with a lot of arch support. Trust me, it will cure the problem. Not to mention its hard to get a good nights sleep if your woke up continuously with foot pains.
Last but not least, they do make a pill called Leg Cramps...my brother suffered with Charlie horses in his legs and feet and said taking these before he went to bed eliminated them. But, I do believe your problem is needing a shoe with a great arch.

I get charlie horses. What I do when I get one is walk around until it goes away. Yes it hurts but thats the only way to get them out. I believe if you drink more water it won't happen as frequent but if it becomes a daily thing more than a few times a day, personally I would talk to my doctor to make sure eveything is okay. Hope you find the answer you are looking for.

Charlie horse are just muscle spasms. Usually caused from a decreased amount of potassium in your body. Eat bananas for added potassium.

Lack of potassium. You are dehydrated combined with not eating enough fresh fruit.
