My honey was like that. He's a college professor. When I met him he was just coming back from a nervous breakdown. He hadn't slept a night in 2 years. He had gotten to the point where he eliminated TV, radio and all foods with flavor because he couldn't stand the stimulation. He did nothing but work. I talked him into getting media and good foods back, but walking 5 miles a day.

That was 8 years ago. He now walks 6 miles a day including a couple of really steep hills, in all weather (and it was 5 above when he left this morning!) In the past 6 years he has written 4 books. He never wrote a book before that. It's 11PM and he's sound asleep, while I'm still up watching Jon Stewart and playing on the computer. Guess I should take my own advice!

So get out there and walk! No ipod or walkman though. Just you and the elements.

I had the same problem. I came up with earplugs, they work great. I also have a stereo in my bedroom where I can play mood music to relax me and drown out the outside noises. But the ear plugs work great, too good in fact because I have to provide some for my friends when they are over because I snore so loudly. I also do meditation when I need it and I take a sleep aid like Tylenol pm.

Drink Celestial Seasonings Hot Tea "Sleepy Time", Take as Hot of a bubble bath as you can stand and soak for 1/2 hour, Take 2 Tylenol PM, Lavender candles burning in the bathroom too!

This combination will put you into a deep sleep!

You could try drinking a calming tea before you go to bed. There are lots at Whole Foods like Sleepy Time Tea. You could also listen to a calming cd like a nature cd where you can hear the ocean or the sound of rain. These things tend to calm me down. You could also get a eye mask so it makes it darker when you are trying to sleep. Try some of these things :) Sleep tight!

The other answers are great... using soothing music, meditate, drinking non decaffeinated tea (or warm milk), and having it dark will work.
I find if I feel like I'm 'under attack', I visualize that I'm in a sphere that has mirrors on the outside, that way I feel safe.
When you lay down, focus on your breathing and nothing else - soon enough you will fall asleep.

eh im an insomniac too and it ******* SUCKS. the guy who said to get a fan has the right idea, i do the same thing. also try beating the **** our things (like a heavy bag) it really helps with stress and tires you out. meditation also helps and drink alcohol. yep when i want to sleep well i meditate, beat the **** out of random stuff for about 1 houre (yeah im in good shape) and then i drink a bunch and pass out. i dont do it much because apparently alcohol is bad for your health...who knew?

I really like meditation to clear all the garbage out of my head before I sleep. It leaves me relaxed and peaceful so I sleep well. Only problem is you really have to quiet your thoughts, and sometimes mine race around so fast it takes a while to settle into it.

Stop reading the papers and watiching the television news. Listen to music and work on a hobby before you go to bed. Don't read any email before you go to bed.
