If the speed limit is 65 mph, how can there be a legal "fast lane?" i suppose the right lane could be the "slow lane" for those people that don't wish to go 65, but in reality, assuming you don't wish to be pulled over by the police, how can there be a "fast lane?" It just doesn't make sense to me.

And the fast lane is different than the carpool/diamond lane, by the way.

The left lane is intended for those who wish to drive as fast as permissable. In some areas the law may be a bit more lenient towards going a bit over the posted limit, conditions permitting.

The states have been blackmailed into accepting federally mandated speed limits or risk losing federal highway funds for their state.

Traditionally driving etiquette is to utilize the lane to the right if driving slower than other traffic.

Still, many drivers will remain in the far left lane despite the presence of other drivers backed up behind them. I've heard drivers state if they are doing the max speed they see no reason to yield to other drivers as they are breaking the law!

Personally, I feel that attitude results in unsafe manuevers by frustrated drivers in other lanes & only helps contribute to what we have come to know as "road rage" .

Flashing lights expecting a car ahead to change lanes is just as rude. If someone wants to drive 80...or,,??, I hope they have the skills to warrant that speed, & a well maintained vehicle as well. Enforcement of the speed limit rests w the local police.

It's not called a fast lane by the people who designed the freeways. It's called the Number 1 lane. The lanes are numbered. 1 is the inside lane nearest the center, followed by 2,3, etc, until you get to what is referred to as the slow lane. But it isn't called the slow lane, either. if there is a carpool lane, it is called the carpool lane, diamond lane, or HOV lane, then the numbers start.

The 'fast lane' is for those that are not getting off the freeway in awhile. It is to be used for passing. Its not so you can exceed the speed limit (although most do, even I am guilty of it).
The slow lane is for those entering and exiting the freeway. It slows things down, so those carrying on through can use the fast lane and move on by.
The middle lane(s) is to be used by those moving over to exit soon, or moving out of the slow lane as they are speeding up.

Clear as mud?

That is the lane for people wanting to go the MAXIMUM speed allowed, usually 65MPH, and sometimes faster away from metro areas.

People going SLOWER than the posted maximum must move to other slower lanes.

Of course, some people think the fast lane means "as fast as you want to go" and some people think the carpool lane has no speed limit at all.

In legal terms there's no such thing as a "fast lane". That term is more slang then anything else.
Perhaps on the German Autoban there's an actual fast lane. The Germans know most cars can safely drive well over 65. Too bad we don't have sensible law-makers here!
