Windows Media Player. It comes with Windows and you can upgrade for free at Microsoft. If you can't play the AVI file, it's probably cuz you don't have the right codec and Microsoft can't find it. You can download K-Lite Codec Pack (for free) and it auto-installs a Media Player Classic, which is like Windows Media Player in a Classic Skin, but it loads much faster and has more options. You can also try VLC Media Player.

You mean .avi files? They can be played in Windows Media Player itself....... In Windows Media Player just go to Tools > Options > File Types and make sure you select all of the file types, which includes Windows Video files or .avi files..... You don't need to download any separate player for that

Real Player or Quick Time. If the some avi's won't play, download DivX Codec pack, some movies need special codecs, this is free.
