Basically, when people were translating/compiling the canon of the bible at various times, they split the books according to length and subject matter. In other words, Samuel, Kings and Chronicles are all just one book in the original, Hebrew bible. In the Greek bible, Samuel and Kings was just called 1, 2, 3 and 4 Kings. Just tradition.
So the short answer is that the original texts have one, big book for each of those, and they were split up by translators who thought they were too long.

In the New Testament (e.g., 1 Cor, 2 Cor) they were letters that Paul wrote to the churches in different cities, so 1 Cor refers to his first letter to the Corinthians and 2 Cor refers to the second letter. I'm not sure about the Old Testament. Maybe it's because the writer wanted to make a division between the chapters. On occasion I've been reading a book other than the Bible and have seen the divisions "Book 1" and "Book 2."

Ye think that strange? It used to be
Frist Kings, Second Kings Third Kings and
Fourth Kings. Now then, First and second Kings
became First and Second Samuel, and third and
fourth Kings became First and second Kings.
WOW!! I'm confused too.

they are in reality 2 books of the bible Ruth and Esther yet they were written by Samuel a prophet and Mordecai respectively. There are besides the undeniable fact that, different bibical names at the same time with Abigail, who became the spouse of King David after her husband Nabal die. Then there became Rebekah the spouse of Isaac, Sarah Abraham's spouse, Deborah a prophetess, Naomi Ruth's spouse, Lois and Eunice the grandmother and mom of Timothy and any such tremendous type of added God fearing women folk reported in the bible. did you keep in mind that the first human beings to appeal to close of Jesus' resurrection were women folk? Matthew 28:3-15. i wish it truly is of help to you.

Its like here is a book of Kings, and here is another book of Kings. We'll name the first one book one and the second one book two. How difficult is that to understand?

Well I believe some of the bible (atleast the New Testament) is taken from letters. So if someone wrote another letter then it would be their name and the number.

Interesting question. Maybe they couldn't think of anything better. Kind of like bad Hollywood sequels?
