No, pain in birth is not just for humans, although animals do have an easier time of it. I think Eve wasn't (or women weren't) picked out of all creation to experience pain in birth. I don't think it was a particular punishment for what she did, but meant that because sin was in the world, there would also be pain and sickness. I don't think that whole passage is really all negative. It's often used as a "curse" on women for disobedience, but it's just how things are in a world where we experience pain. Women do have pain in childbirth, but we desire our husbands and want children. It's really a wonderful thing.

oh and women deserve the pain! thats a bunch of crap. For one thing it is going to hurt to push out a child, its natures force. second of all there is so many pain medications out there now that it stops us from having those painfull births

Pain happens not only during childbirth, by the way.
Romans 8:22 "We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time."
Ever since evil was let loose in the world.

It is the trade off between a large brain and a functional pelvis, at least in humans, or do you prefer 'god did it'.

Nobody did anything to deserve it, it's just nature. Men back in the day of the Bible just needed reasons to explain why stuff happened, just like other mythology.

It's not easy for any animal to give birth - I'd be more likely to chalk it up to biology than "God".

I only hope that someone has an answer worthy of your question. I am in awe of minds that can conceive and ponder such thoughts.
