my dog eats twice a day and poops at odd hours. i'm trying to change his feed to once a day. when his main meal is in the evening, he poops just after breakfast. but when his main meal is in the morning, he doesn't poop during his walk which is just after (hasn't digested?). he poops even before dinner. i'm just wondering what will happen when he's eventually only fed 1 meal a day? any idea how long it takes for bowel movement to occur?

thanks all! i'll give these tips a try. well, i just brought my dogs back to singapore from perth. my dad's not big on them. he complains about my dog pooping all the time (near our swing..) so i'm trying to get him to do it during our walk. and he's on a diet. so i'm trying to see if i can work things out. either just breakfast, just dinner, or both. wish me luck!

sorry! new detail! my dog's 6 1/2 years old. haha. he's being fed twice daily cos he's on a weight loss diet and is only allowed about 90g of special dog food a day which isn't much. so i break it into 2 lots. but thinking of changing it to just once with full 90g.

if your dog is eating regularly, you should be able to tell when a bowel movement is about to occur. depending on the breed, it can be anywhere from 4-8 hours after meals. most often after rigorous exercise or a long nap.

Bowel movements are different for every dog, but I think my dog must be related to yours :-)

My answer probably isn't going to help you much, because my dog will poop in the morning about an hour after she wakes up and before she has eats breakfast. She won't poop again until it's time for her to go to bed, which is usually 6 or 7 hours afters she's had dinner.

Even my prior dogs who as adults, ate once a day, would only have a bowel movement in the morning and late at night. I guess it all depends on each individual dog and the food that they eat.

Your dog's age will have a lot to do with his "bathroom" habits.
Very young puppies for example poop almost immediately after eating.
If you are trying to start him on once-a-day meals then I assume he is nearly an adult, which is fine to do and even preferable to some.
Try to feed him on a schedule, nearly the same time every day. His system will adjust quickly. Watch him for the first few days and he will start having a regular poop schedule on his own.
That way you can keep up with him without too much effort.
I have 3 adult dogs that eat at night, around 9pm, and all 3 poop in the morning.

Bowel Movement After Eating

I have found with my dog, if I wait about 20 minutes after I know he has eaten, then take him out and then play "rough" with him he is more likely to poop within 10 minutes than if I do not excite him. When I had an older dog that I fed once a day, I would feed him in mid day then he would be lazy while I was gone, and when I returned from work he was ready to go out. Hope this helps

I would not cut his food back just so he wont poop so much! some dogs will go at the same time every day others will go several times at different times. As long as he isn't doing it in the house why is it a problem?

A grown dog can hold it a lot longer than a puppy, usually hours.

Puppies go more often,as dogs get older they go less often. Are you sure its a good idea to only feed your dog once a day?
