My Dr prescribed Levbid, which confuses me b/c some of the side effects are constipation and bloating which are my biggest complaints to start with. Curious what other med's are being used succesfully.

I am a pharmacist and I don't have IBS, but I have gotten great results with recommending Peppermint Plus (by Enzymatic Therapy) in a lot of patients.
((it is available in most health food stores as enteric coated peppermint oil capsules)). Also try taking a good digestive enzyme pill with meals and a good quality probiotic supplement.

First I want to say I am so sorry for you. I would rather give birth to a flaming porcupine than have one of those attacks.

I get your concern about the bloating and constipation, but it's not the same. This is discomfort, as opposed to that feeling that your insides will just compress and implode soon.

Eat a high fiber cereal around the same time every day. And consume more liquids.

When you feel an attack coming on, take some ibuprofen (or whatever works for you) and start slamming liquids. Not cold stuff; that seems to make it worse. Hot tea is great.

Not to try to scare you but mine turned out to be a side effect of ovarian cancer. Not to say yours is because it's different for everyone, but it wouldn't hurt to have that checked out.

Hope this helped, and I hope you feel better.

Sometimes changing your diet can help drastically decrease the symptoms of IBS- my boyfriend has it and found that a change in diet has made such a difference that he doesn't have to take medication for it at all! Some of the biggest items he tries to avoid are Soda and energy drinks (the carbonation increases gas), red meat, anything deep fried or high in fat, egg yolks and items like mayo and salad dressing. There is a more detailed list of these items at http://www.helpforibs.com/diet/trigger2.asp which may help relieve your symptoms.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

I have been on Zelnorm and I find that it has helped me a great deal. The only time now that I have terrible symptoms is when I am under a great deal of stress. Relaxation and meditation seems to help with that and gentle yoga stretching. I sypathize with you I have a whole range of pant sizes because of this depending on how bloated I was. I has gotten much better because of the Zelnorm.

Isn't that funny that some of the meds they prescribe, their side affect, is the reason they gave you the medication to begin with? Go figure.

Peppermint oil works well when your just starting to feel the abdominal discomfort and calming yourself before it happens. I know when I know an attack is coming I get all tense but I calm down, its not as bad.

I'd recommend going to see a good naturopath.
