Next time a teenage/young adult woman comes to you thinking she's crazy, ask her if she's on birth control. Stopping may solve all her problems. It solved mine.

I was diagnosed with depression. I'm not saying that stopping birth control will cure everybody's problems. I'm just saying that it is a simple thing to rule out before delving into psych drugs. Aside from depression, birth control made me angry and irritable. I didn't mean to offend anyone w/ the term "crazy", but that's how it made me feel.

Yes, I am a therapist. Stopping birth control may have solved your problem but it may not be the solution to everyone who believes they are 'crazy'. For starters, what is 'crazy'? Could you post the exact diagnosis you were given please? Thank you. If I find it necessary, I will edit this post to be more on point to what you are referring to.

That's great advice because most of the time what I see is that after a woman has had some blood tests done we find out that they don't have depression they have a problem with their thyroid or something along those lines.

I did over ten years of mental health counseling before I became an Addictions Therapist and that's the observation I have made. Of course most of my work was in institutions. So it's not that women can't have depression problems because we can. It's just that a woman's body goes through more changes than a mans and most of those changes are related to something hormonal. So you are right, as women we should be there for one another and share information like that. You probably helped several women on this site.

Mental health is a very serious matter, a large quantity of the population has some form of mental illness whether severe or not birth control may be one cause for some peoples symptoms but it does not apply to everyone else. Some birth control pills have even been proven to help "organize" some peoples moods it's really something a doctor should evaluation before anyone does anything.

i am a therapist as well and i agree with the prior professional poster who noted that if this worked for your friend, that's great, but it might not work for everyone

in fact, some people may find that being on bc helps with certain problems because it keeps hormone levels more predictable
