Yes, I am serious, I've read some very scary review as you can probably tell. Just after a clean hotel room (for 2) that is fairly central but is not going to kill me price or vermin wise. Can be basic and on the smaller side.

Thanks in advance!

I should have added that the $250 is for a price in May (I can find lovely hotels now for well under that price).

I just stayed at the UN Millennium, website:www.millenniumhotels.com for less than $200/ w/ great views of city, the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings, pool on the 27th floor, large room, real nice. If that's too far for you; it is by Grand Central, though a bit of a walk to Time Square, etc, look at travelzoo.com, I have gotten $800 suites for $200 there, believe it or not. Right now there are a few quality hotels at or below your price range.

The Belvedere in Times Square is excellent - keep checking Orbitz, PriceLine, etc. You should be able to get a double room for under $200 if you shop well. The Belvedere is spotless and there is a microwave, fridge, coffeemaker, iron, hairdryer and wireless internet connection in every room.

I really like the Edison Hotel. Nice deco lobby, small but clean rooms, restaurant, just off of Times Square.

maybe you could try the site i provided below to book a hotel.
because their rates are lower than the big name companies, you might find something nice for cheaper than you expect.

good luck!
