For starters, it is always reassuring to someone who is suffering from panic attacks to have someone with them who is calm and in control as well as understanding that the person experiencing panic attacks feels as if the symptoms are physical and real.

Panic attacks cause hyperventillation. Get a small lunch style paper bag and have the distressed person breathe in and out of the bag. I am not sure why that works, but it is a method I have read that is effective. If that is not possible, have the person try to control their breathing-- in thru the nose, exhale through the mouth. If you have taken La Maz classes for pregnancy, the breathing exercises for pain would probably help someone in panic mode.

Make sure the person is truly suffering from a panic attack and not some other medical problem. A medical person should assess the situation.

Never ever give the person suffering from panic attacks anything to calm them down, such as alcohol or prescriptions drugs. Only an md should make that determination.

Do not let the person who is having an attack drive themselves anywhere until the situation is under control, be supportive and make sure they are not going to endanger others while they are experiencing a high level of anxiety.

Bless you for caring and good luck.

Be there to support them, love them and help them to calm down by talking to them. However, if they really want to regain control in their lives they need to learn some real world skills. Anxiety and stress only get worse if left untreated. If they are unable to afford the $100 plus an hour that good therapy currently costs then there are other solutions like the one I created for people who are NOT rich and still need the right help. There are millions of stressed-out Americans, at last count more then 45 million who have NO health insurance and can not afford proper treatement much less the medications doctors will give them. But what happens when the pill bottle is empty. Then what? People can learn to manage stress. I coach tons of people how to end there anxiety and stress forever using a proven method that never fails to work. http://www.attackanxiety.com in the mean time you can start with these tips:
Keep a positive attitude.
Accept that there are events that you cannot control.
Be assertive instead of aggressive. "Assert" your feelings, opinions, or beliefs instead of becoming angry, defensive, or passive.
Learn and practice relaxation techniques.
Exercise regularly. Your body can fight stress better when it is fit.
Eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
Get enough rest and sleep. Your body needs time to recover from stressful events.
Don't rely on alcohol or drugs to reduce stress.
Seek out social support.
Learn to manage your time more effectively.

I hope this helps.

Ok. I have suffered from them for years. The best thing I could do was always to get out of the situation and have someone to talk to. Not about anything in particular. Just talk. Laugh. It takes the mind off it. But I will say that does not always work. I would suggest they go to a doctor. There are some good medications out there.

Try to make them as calm as possible. I had them for a very long time they are very scary be nice, friendly and not overbearing let them know that everything will eventually be ok. Have them breath sit walk whatever it is they have to do for them to calm down. Everyone is different and has there own ways of dealing with how they themselves relax find out theres when they are calm and use it in time of distress

Talk to them calmly, help get them out of the situation causing the panic (i.e. crowd, traffic, etc.), let them breathe into a bag if they are hyperventilating. Do not tell them there is nothing to panic over it does not help. Do not judge, just be there and be calm.

I suffer from them. I just breathe deeply and try to relax. You might want to consult a doctor about them. They can give you medication to help control them.
