Atheism is not an alternative religion or spiritual cosmology, it reflects several philosophical schools of thought.
Personally I prefer the existential nihilist cosmology.
Occured during the age of reason which appears to be drawing to an end.

I am not sure if it has yet. It certainly can not be considered as such in the USA where the President Bush has stated publicly that he does not believe atheists can be patriots.
