I think you need to see if she is having allergic problems to her food. If you feed dry food try CA Natural for a month or two. That is only chicken and rice. The corn in most foods is a common pet allergen. It could be the chicken - Natural Balance has a venison and pea you could try if the CA Natural doesn't work.
That's going to take a few months as you must switch foods very gradually mixing the old with increasing amounts of the new over a period of several weeks.

If it is behavioral you might try flower essences. Go to www.spiritessence.com and get Dr. Jean Hovfe's "Obsession Remedy" to try with your cat. It helped my cat a great deal to reduce her over grooming. You could treat her with that currently with trying a diet change.

Another possibility is that your cat may have flea larvae in her system. This drives cats crazy.

Do you notice any little "sesame seed" looking things lying around the house, particularly where your cat sleeps? That can be the dried larvae worms as they exit your cat's "southern quarters."

If you see this, or something that looks like small bits of "moving rice" on your cat's hind end, then you have your answer. The fix is a little pricey (c.$75), but it is quick and easy. Simply take your cat to the vet, tell him/her what you have observed and be ready for your vet to give your cat a shot that will kill the larvae and leave the cat not only unharmed but feeling much, much better!

Then get your cat on a flea treatment program. Frontline is great for dogs, but I have found it very unsatisfactory for cats. We use Advantage for cats. Again, a little pricey ($15/mo), but well worth the relief to your kitty.

Others here have posted that this could be an allergy, which I agree. Amazingly, cats are often allergic to fleas! But it could be some other allergy.

Say, have you tried bathing your cat? It's done, you know. Get a cat shampoo and be ready for a splashing good time! Or take your cat to a groomer. PetSmart has cat groomers. Again with the pricey, though: $54.

I'd start with the observation of the "sesame seeds" and "rice-looking things" first, then go from there to the vet. You can always bathe your cat later.

Hope this helps!

Well, I don't really see why this is a problem unless it is causing sores or something. Some cats are just obsessive about cleanliness. If she is developing sore or raw places where she has licked she may have fleas or mites. You might take her to the vet to have her checked out. The vet may also have some suggestions on how to get her to quit licking herself obsessively...like maybe some kind of ointment, spray, or shampoo. Good luck.

Excessive licking in a cat may be due to stress. Why don't you try one of those cat calming products out in the market today like "Feliway" ? You can get it from the pet store. Its worth a try to see if it will work on your cat.

I don't see how it is a problem unless she is hurting herself or won't eat or drink water. I guess if its serious take her to see a vet, or ask someone at a pet store. She may be allergic to something (Plants, shampoo, etc) and it itches, so she licks herself. I would talk to a vet if you think this is a serious problem.
