God knew what sin Adam committed, and the actions he did to commit that sin. Why did God ask this question of Adam?
Do you believe that this is the first example of God showing humanity the necessity of verbally confessing our sins.

Mercy, Adam & Eve missed the chance to take responsibilty for thier sin. God knew what they had done as he knows what we all ahve done. Mercy gives us the chance to confess and lesson or dismiss the penelty of that sin.

I see my two year old holding the bottle of chocolate syrup, I see the chocolate syrup on the floor. I know he's dumped the chocolate syrup on the floor. I say "what did you do?" so that he can verbally account for his behaviour. I can then say "why?" and go on to let him know why this was wrong behaviour. I do think that verbal confession is very important. I'm not sure if you're getting at it as being pertinent for salvation. We are to confess our faith in Christ "believe and confess" as an act of obedience but I don't think it has any "saving value" in and of itself.

Yes, it could be possible that God wanted Adam to admit for himself that he was wrong in eating of that fruit from the "tree of knowledge" after God had commanded Adam not to eat the fruit off that tree.

God wanted to see if Adam would tell the truth. Instead Adam passed the buck to Eve and then Eve passed the buck to the serpent.

Yes, probably.
Also, it is Jewish custom to ask a question instead of making a statement. So, Adam, did you think I was lying?
