Because not everyone wants to elope.
Also, many people are now having what they call cash weddings, and you end up not having to pay for anything in the end. All the money the guest give you pay for all your bills, honeymoon and part of your mortgage.

i think that some people figure its the most important day in their lives, so spare no expense. I do not have the funds to do that, and don't know that I would if I did. But I think that a lot of things are like that today. I mean who buys a car for 60, 70 , 80+ thousand dollars? I think my wedding day is more important than whether or not I drive a nice car. I guess it just depends on the person and their financial situation.

There are many reasons to spend so much. For instance, I want a party, with alcohol, that means $$$$$. My dress was cheap compared with most, and I am cutting corners where I can but there are certain things that I am not willing to cut corners on and one of those is a great photographer, and they can be pricey. I am having a small wedding (35 people) so that we can share our love with others who love us, but I see nothing wrong with eloping. I'm all about a vegas wedding too!

Personally, I want to have a nice wedding. I don't plan on going bankrupt, but I do plan on spending. It's all a personal choice. I have been to many weddings and there are things I liked and didn't like. I want to make my wedding enjoyable for myself, my spouse and all of our family and friends.
What I consider standard, maybe outrage to some and cheap to others. Say someone spends $50,000 on their wedding; you may thing they were nuts, but if they can afford that, then they might consider it pocket change.
The amount of a wedding, whether cheap or excessive; really does not measure how long the marriage will last.

Well, like someone else said, if you have it, why not? Of course the amount you spend doesn't equal happiness or longevity. But just because you wanted to elope and I (and many others brides) want a big wedding doesn't make your relationship any more real than mine. Trust me...we are freakin' ecstatic!

People want to have their DREAM wedding. Women have dreamed of what they wanted their wedding to be since they were little girls. Dream weddings cost money. YES it is smart to save those thousands of dollars for something else such as college tuition for future kids. Its one of the most important days in a persons life so people like to go all out. YES it is like putting on a show like that other person said. Did you have a destination wedding? Now those are great if you want romance, adventure, ONLY close family/friends, great scenery, and it saves tons of money and headaches. When I get married I think I want a destination wedding.

you dont really know because how much you spend doesnt say how long you are going to last together. The reason why people spend so much is because the people that offer the services overcharge and take advantage of people that dont like to shop around for better deals. So you did a good job with your wedding and i do hope you and your husband last a long time. And when people have a budget they try their best to stay under budget when they dont they dont care how much they spend.

My budget for my future wedding is no more than 5 thousand dollars, and that's at a full maximum for everything.

"Why do ppl spend so much?" Because it's THIER wedding and THEIR money and they have a right to do what they want to do. Just as YOU had the right to do what YOU wanted. And don't bet your life on staying together longer...the wedding isn't what determines the length of marriage.
