Gatorade was first. It was created by some scientists from the University of Florida in the 1970's. So it was named after the university mascot the Gator. Powerade is a product from Coca-cola and came out about six to seven years ago

Gatorade. I know it was made because Florida University is the Gators, and someone made it for their teams. That's why it's always geared towards sports, etc. Someone once told me that Powerdade was then made as competition for teams who hated the Gators. I don't know if that part is true, but I know it was made later, as a knock off.
