Will society accept me if I shave my head? How do employers view it? Will it change my status in my current job? I work retail, it a clothing store. I am pretty feminine, I wear makeup and jewelry everyday, and always have my hair done. I don't want to be so tied down tho, any longer. I'm tired of the fuss of having to do my hair everyday. I'm strong and independant and feel that I could deal with the stares and what people thought of me. Is it so taboo still, or should I just go for it?

Shaving your head may be a little extreme, you might want to go for a short hair cut, but if you decide to shave your head people will eventually accept the fact.(it may take a while for your community to get used to it)

You can shave your head if you want too but some people might look at it as a cry for attention, just because it's against the norm. It's up to you but personally I don't think it looks good on a woman, weather you care or not is probably a totally different question. All I'm saying is I would try to define yourself in otherways, shaving your head is pretty extreme, I get this odd image of a hot chick wearing a dress(what? I'm a guy.) bunch of preppy makeup and nice jewelery and a shaved head. Then I think.... gross... if she was going to shave her head, she could have at least got some freaky tattoo's or some metal. Wimpy preppy chick crying for attention with a shaved head. All I'm saying is that maybe you could change your image in otherways to define yourself without looking crazy extreme, and just being hardcore. Good luck.

It is definately taboo. But i think you should DEFINATELY do it!! Because youre such a strong woman already, people know you for that, and I think the people that already know you would admire that you have the courage to do that! As for strangers, you might get stared at a little but they could be thinking the same thing, and honestly if i saw a bald woman walking down the street looking still pretty and feminine at the same time Id give her props. Celebrate being strong and independant and do it! You only live once!!

I think you should do whatever you want with your hair. If you have the confidence. Then do it. If it fits your personality. I say more power to you. People are only going to stare out of concern or wonder. Thinking you have or had cancer. Thats how people think. They would not think, omg this woman has no hair, how odd. They will be left thinking, I kid you not. I wonder how much chemo she needed. I wonder what kind of cancer she has or had. I am just bringing up the cancer factor because we all know someone with it. This option is left up to you dear. You know your personality better then anyone on the boards. If you want to shave it off, thats your business. Just promise me. you won't do it when you are having a bad hair day, and do it just to say THERE, ONE LESS THING I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT. The next day you may be in different mood and regret it. This is something only you can choose to do.

I say go for it. You say you're very feminine... so you don't sound like you look like Macy Gray or something, so you should be able to pull it off. HOORAY FOR NOT WORRYING ABOUT WHAT SOCIETY THINKS. So many people can't get out of that way of thinking. Now whether it will affect your job or not... remains to be seen. It depends on how open or close-minded your employer is. But seriously, go for it. It's your body and head so if you want to take a break from the requirements of "hair care" then h*ll, you deserve it.

I am a 24 year old African American woman with a very dark complexion. I shaved my head two years ago.
I intend to stay that way. I LOVE BEING BALD! I believe that baldness can be both beautiful and feminine.
I think that more women of all races should try it.

Well i know a few women who have done that and were not happy afterwards I would get a short hairstyle that was easy up-keep, you can get a pretty short cut that's cute and still easy to maintain, I wouldn't look down on someone who had this but a lot of people would, good luck with whatever you choose.

Here's what you do. You get ahold of the nearest relay for life rally. Get a sign up sheet to collect money from sponsers if you have your head shaved during a relay for life event. This way you are doing it for a great cause, anybody who looks at you funny you can tell them you did it for cancer research. If you like the look you can keep it, if not then grow it back knowing you did a fantastic thing.

I think you should do what makes you happy, but if you're worried about how people will perceive you, maybe you shouldn't do something so drastic. I think people would be taken back a bit by something like that. I'm a guy and when I shaved my hair, everyone acted very shocked at first. For a woman to do it, it would definitely change her image. But if you don't care about that...go for it...its your body.

Go for it! You are your own person. Even if you get some stares, it dosent matter. Because you are doing what you want to do. It wont make you any less of a women. I bet you would look beautiful with or without your hair. Do whatever you feel is right.
