Feelings get hurt during any break-up to some degree and it is unavoidable but the severity depends mainly on how the person breaks off the relationship i.e. being mean about it, leaving a message on an answering machine, in general by not doing it in person.

There is no way to do it without hurting feelings.

The other person will respect you most if you tell them that you don't feel the relationship is working out the way you hoped. Do it in private. Be prepared for them to ask you why - because most likely they will. If you don't want to go into details, tell them that you had different expectations or whatever. If you'd like, be sure to tell the person that you appreciated the time you spent with them and you wish them the best in the future.

But in general, just be honest and straightforward and do everything in a respectful way.

It isn't possible.... Just be honest, straightforward and to the point... you don't have to be mean, but if it isn't working, it isn't working and you should end it quickly and decisively... There will be feelings and emotions involved... you can't be responsible for that and you can't control it either.
