It depends on the family and the arrangement that they have. I stayed with my parents until I was 25 and got married. The effects for us is that I was able to save money and my parents got help around the house - both physically and financially.

I know a lot of people over the age of 24 still living with their parents and I think thats awful(unless its an emergency). I would probably understand if your in college but if your already out or have a job then get a place of your own. How will they ever be independent? Even in nature you have to spread your wings and fly. My older sister still lives with my parents and complains on how she has to put 100 dollars every other week just to help my parents on bills. She's stingy with her money and really doesn't know how expensive life is these days. I don't live with my parents and moved out when I was young and boy did I learn how hard life is....

My 26 year old daughter and 6 year old granddaughter live with me. The long range effects are that I am ready to have all the locks changed and put their stuff outside, She lost her job Dec1 and has done nothing about it since my computer doesent have word on it and she needs word for her resume. I sleep with my purse under my bed, hide my medications and generally have grown to hate her. She has me over a barrel since she thinks I won't kick her out because of the granddaughter. She doesn't know how close she is. I have the locksmiths phone number written down.

I guess it depends when the live with their parents, under what circumstances, how they were raised, and what their parents expectations are for adult children.

Ideally, if it happens, they function as roommates, with a sharing of all expenses and chores and home maintenance - more physical work going to the adult children if the parents are much older - and they all have a blast enjoying each other's company.

If parents don't expect their adult children to function as adults, they utterly fail and betray them.

They do tend to have more problems ajusting to running everything on their own. If they have payed board and helped around the house then maybe they will do ok, but if they have had a free ride thats where the problems start.
