Join the regular Navy. Retire when you are 46 and draw retainer pay (retired pay), vice having to wait until you are 55 or 60 now, can't remember, pay for reserves retainer pay. The likelihood of you going overseas is less in the regular Navy, but you will go to a ship, leave your family (if you have one) do crappy jobs, but not any less than you would in the reserves. In either, you will have commissary and NEX benefits, if you live near a base.
I have done both, joined USN in 1988, got out in 1997-stayed in reserves-came back in in 1999. I have no regrets. I also see all the friends I had, along with my unit, being recalled to active duty. It's a win win situation, just depends on what you want. I also have a friend who waited until he was 31 to join, he has no regrets either. The older you are, either is USN or USNR, the more mature you are and are able to handle the dumb stuff. Good luck to you.

24 years (12 active, 12 reserve, and recalled for two years) Education, yes Mr Kerry I actually got a degree and most of the people I serve with do too.

Benefits have been great but most of all is the sense of duty and the camaraderie that last a lifetime.

pension, PX privileges, life and health insurance. Training. GI Bill.travel. Self discipline etc etc.... Lots of good stuff. Plus you'll see the world and serve your country, which some of us still think is a noble idea.
