.Avi is a regular movie format actually. It's not special to torrents, and is used often outside them.
If you want .avis to play on your computer, go to codecs.com and download some codec packs that promise to play them.
However, if you must transport this movie to some other computer, the next easiest thing is to with your DVD/CD or other storage device, burn VLC (http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable)
with your disk. It works on all platforms (windows, linux, mac), takes little resources, the only downside is it looks ugly. There are other programs out there, such as winamp, but off your computer i find VLC works the best (i like realplayer at home). Note that's a portable modification, i don't know if the modification does anything, but just in case.
The last option is to change the file format. AVS video tools or AVS video converter (avsmedia.com). However, this is the most complex option, reduces quality or increases size dramatically. But you don't have to burn VLC every time.
By the way - PIRACY IS STEALING!

You first download the file from the torrent using any of the numerous torrent downloaders (BitComet, Azereus, BitLord, etc). It should ask you where to save the file and once it's done downloading, voila! It's a movie file that you can open up with VLC player or Media Player Classic (if it comes out with no video and/or audio, then you need to have the proper codecs. Try K-Lite Codec Pack (should be free)). Oh, btw, it's illegal to download movies that you don't own (or just to download movies at all, I'm not sure).

avi, mpg, and mov all pretty much the standard formats. Thats pretty regular to me. What do you mean by a regular movie, DVD format? If so then you need a program to convert it. I use WinAVI - http://www.winavi.com to do that. It handle avi, mpg, wmv, vob. Vob is the file names you see on a DVD, by the way. But it converts to or from dvd format.
