There is different forms of twitching in different stages of sleep, when first falling asleep we tend to have myoclonic jerking it is the body beginning to relax and expelling unused energy
Through the night we tend to have motor activity movement this is just normal twicthes through the night that go on.
Then there is Periodic Limb Movement disorder that are characterized by leg movements or jerks which typically occur every 20 to 40 seconds during sleep. PLMS causes sleep to be disrupted.Causing excessive daytime sleepiness. Related to Restless Leg Syndrome.
Most twitches are normal and just random though as we sleep our brain is very active and constantly monitoring us, as we sleep our limbs go limp our breathing slows and our heart rate drops a little when the brain thinks they may be getting a bit too low it will send out a message to twitch some areas of the body to get blood flowing and get us back up to pace again.

the twitching action is called myoclonic jerking... it is simply your body's way of releasing the energy that has built up within in the muscles throughout the day so that you can have a more restful sleep. From time to time the jerking action can work it's way into a dream.. such as one in which you may feel like you are falling, or other such dreams.

Yeah, those dreams are cool. It feels like something is going to happen and then you flinch to either get out of the way or else save something. Great for me, not so good for anyone who is in bed with me though....

What is really freaky though, is when you are like dreaming something, and you know it is a dream but it is so terrifying that you can't move and yet you are telling your body to move and wake up but nothing is happening so you are just going through the terror and wondering when it is going to end.
