I am a church choir director (children & teens) with little budget, throwing together a musical and basing it on the life of the saints -- the skit parts will be little vignettes of saints and we'll sprinkle in some songs here and there. The basic plot will be a girl trying to figure out just what a "saint" is, and we're talking living saints as well as dead ones. It'll lead to the idea of the Community of Saints.

There are so many saints to choose from, help! Do you have a favorite?

I'm looking for saints of all characters ... not all were sweet little things, some had some righteous anger going on. Some martyrs, some hermits, etc., and not just the "popular" ones, either (John the Baptist, Mary & Martha, etc.).

So, please give me your favorite saint. Thanks!

Saint Augustine - He was a horrible person for a long time before giving his life to Christ. Also the one with the "ocean in a hole" story. Pretty sure you can google it if necessary.

Saint Francis - I love the cute little animals that go along with his story. (It's a real child pleaser and a pretty common saint.)

Saint Thomas Aquinas - The patron saint of scholars. I really like him, and he is another saint that kids should be able to identify.

Blessed Mother Theresa - If we are going for the modern saint approach.

Saint Joan of Arc - Makes a great epic story for a play.

Saint Lucy - You needed a martyr.

Saint Theresa of Avila - A sort of tomboy troubled saint. A nice saint for kids to know that even when they do things wrong they shouldn't give up.

OK, those are my favorites.

My Confirmation saint was Saint Catherine of Alexandria, but her story isn't exactly kid friendly.

Good luck!

Having seen someone suggest St. Anthony, I have to agree. For kids like me that lost everything (mostly homework) he was a lifesaver. Better teach those kids about St. Anthony soon.

My favorite is St. Teresa of Avila, she is one of only 2 women to be named Doctor of the Church for her writing on Christian mysticism. (not to be confused with the other Theresa, from France, who was something of a nut case.) I also like St. John of the Cross, his poetry is wonderful.
As a Benedictine, of course, I must mention St. Benedict and his little know twin sister St. Scholastica. You know the story of her and the rain don't you? If not e-mail me.

Others that you could do are the ones everyone knows such as St. Francis and St. Clare. Don't forget the new St. Padre Pio.

St. Maximilian Kolbe -- the martyr of Auschwitz

St. Noel Chabanel -- one of the North American Jesuit martyrs who could have gone back to France but who vowed to stay in Canada for love of Jesus and the Indians

St. Philomena -- she has quite a sense of humor when she answers her clients!

St. Anthony -- I lose a lot of stuff. ;-)
