I fed her a leaf (small) of cabbage and now she seems real loaf like. She is sleeping and I did play with her earlier (before I gave her the leaf) and she was fine. It seems that after, she has been really sleepy, tired, lazy. I am wondering if I poisoned my dachshund? She was fine up until now. I wonder if she is truly sick or just tired from the day.

I'm not sure why people are saying dogs can't eat vegtables...it's just not true. I feed all my dogs veggies all the time. My cockerspaniels FAVORITE thing in the world is lima beans. I used to be a vet tech! all my dogs are healthy! its fine. They shouldn't be fed that stuff as their main diet, but it's ok every once in a while. The vets I worked for used to tell people with overweight dogs to feed then carrots instead of dog biscuts!
I doubt one cabbage leaf did any damage unless it had pesticide on it or something, but thats not likely. Just watch her closely. if she has a loose stool or vomits take her to the doc. otherwise, i'm pretty sure shes just sleepy. You didnt say the age of the dog. Puppies sleep ALOT, and have a tendancy to run around like crazy and then just conk out like that!

There are a number of reasons a dog could get sick from a food that really don't have anything to do with the food itself. I wouldn't feed my dog Beneful anyway because it's full of fillers and has a red dye in it that has been outlawed for human consumption, but even so, the reason could be that owners did not switch the food gradually (which upsets stomachs) or that the dog was allergic to something in the food such as wheat gluten (common in Westies). I worked at a pet store all last year and didn't hear a lot of reports of dogs getting sick off of Beneful. It is a top seller, so unless this is a recent scare, I'm not sure it's something serious.

I looked on the poison control center section of the ASPCA website and didn't see it on either the toxic or non-toxic list, but they do have a number you can call to find out and also an option to email your question. (link below in sources). I DO know that they found that raisins and grapes are toxic to dogs, so I just wanted to pass that along since it was something I wouldn't expect. I agree the cabbage will probably make some gas rumbles, but I guess the safest plan of action is to call your vet to ask. Good luck!

I have dachshunds. Why did you give her a cabbage leaf? She's a carnivore and can't digest a cabbage leaf, so it might be just sitting there, or worse, blocking her digestive track.

Safest thing is to call a vet ER right now and just ASK them if you need to bring her in. They'll give you the straight scoop.

Keep in mind that MUCH of what we eat is NOT good for dogs. Hint - grapes are poisonous to dogs.

Dogs are omnivores, just like people. They can eat both plants and animals. That being said there are tons of things out there which have varying levels of toxicity (e.g., nothing with caffeine it it ever for a dog). To my knowledge, most cabbage is not a problem but many types of leaves/plants can be. The exception is "skunk cabbage" which is considered toxic. A list like this will give you a better idea of foods to avoid: http://www.inch.com/~dogs/safety.html but in general, just don't give the dog table scraps. There is no need and it leads to begging.

I doubt if cabbage will hurt her. Might give her some gas. She is probably just tired. I wouldn't feed her too much people food. She needs a good quality dog food. Dogs are not vegetarians.

You should get her to the Vet for A check up. Just to make sure.... Make sure It isn't baby cabbage. I heard that could cause something bad Like Anemia! Hurry to the Vet!
