It is perfectly normal. Almost every puppy does it and nobody knows exactly why. It's called "coprophagia". Usually it's just a phase and your dog will grow out of it as he gets older.
Coprophagia isn't limited to dogs, even baby humans do it sometimes if left alone unsupervised. If your dog isn't a puppy, well some dogs never grow out of it but it isn't uncommon. You can try giving him pumpkin puree with his food, as they say this makes the poo taste bad but don't know from experience. My dog used to eat his own poo until a few months ago. He did it during all of his puppyhood.
There are a few theories that try to find a possible explanation to this behavior. It could be out of boredom, hungriness, a vitamin deficiency, because it's warm and has a nice texture, etc. I left you a link below.

Our two labs, a female and male, did for a little while. Research found that it could be boredom, stress, etc. When investigating the stool, we found that some of the food was not digested all the way. We started feeding them less amounts more often, and both problems ended. The undigested food, and the stool eating.

Not normal but dogs do it. Try picking the poop up before that happens.
