I say the Matrix. No real good reasons other than when i was looking for a car i test drove one of those and absolutely loved it. I couldn't afford it though. It had the "bubble" look that i like, but once you got inside it wasn't that small and it had cool compartments. That's a big plus for me.

Camry is roomy and V6 models are powerful. Interior is very plush even in entry level models. It won car of the year.
Honda Accord is also excellent and will retain it's value even (slightly) better than the Camry. A bit sportier to drive than the Camry, lighter on it's feet.
Both Accord and Camry have almost exactly the same interior room. The differences are subtle. Camry has a bit of a quieter interior and more isolation from the road. Accord is a bit lighter on it's feet.
If you are more apt to buy a 4 cylinder stick shift model, I'd go for the Accord.
Honda CR-V is an excellent all-around vehicle with very flexible inteiror space that does just about everything pretty well and is satisfying to drive and very safe.
Prius is excellent and fuel mileage is very good. Also very high resale value.
Matrix is fun to drive and handles better than the CR-V and gets the best fuel mileage of all the non-hybrids in this bunch and has the lowest price, but it lacks some of the CR-V's utility.
I would also recommend the Camry Hybrid, if you like the idea of a hybrid, but want a roomier and more conventional car than the Prius. The Camry Hybrid also has better performance than the Prius.
Oh and...Ford Fusion is
1) Unreliable
2) Unsafe in an accident
3) A first model year Ford, so expect 27 recalls.
4) A Ford so it will depreciate like a rock.
I avoid American cars like the plague. It's not opinion, simply check Edmunds.com TCO and Consumer Reports. American cars are mostly unreliable and depreciate like crazy. Most Korean cars are junk too.
You have a good list to work with there. I'd say narrow down your priorities as far as cargo room, fuel mileage, handling/performance etc. and then go on some test drives.
The CR-V is a great all around choice with few compromises if you expect to carry passengers and cargo.
The Prius is an excellent choice if you have a longer commute and/or do a lot of driving and don't carry cargo as often.
Matrix is a great choice for your budget. The entry level model is a bargain and comes well-equipped.

Of all suggested the Hyundai Sanota gives you the main indoors and trunk area . It has the terrific assure and is rated maximum secure interior the crash try. It gets as much as 31 MPG and is loaded with all the buttons and bells. The 2009 has had many variations made and continues to be no longer lots greater advantageous than the 2008 or a sparkling 2007 that are uncommon yet accessible. 2 thousand rebate on 2009. 3 thousand on 2007&8. till it replaced. No contest for me.

I have a '06 Camry for my work car, nice ride and gas mileage but the interior is not holding up well. For the Honda, overpriced, look at the Hyundai Sonata and save $5K. Actually I just bought a Cadillac CTS as my personal vehicle, if shopping in the $30k range look into it.

all of these cars are very good choices, but if i were just using it to go to work and back, i would drive a prius because its VERY fuel efficient
but if you wanted something with more luxury and style, then you could go with a camry or accord, but the gas mileage is worse
in the end, the choice is up to you
