One time I was talking to a woman. She asked me if I went to church. To make a long story short, he started talking to me about faith in God and the like. Then she mentioned something about another woman she knew who was an atheist. That woman had recently died. About this woman, the woman I was talking to said, "I bet she believes now!"

Even as a theist, I found that to be just a tad judgmental and harsh. What do you think?

German Bastard: I choose how I describe myself VERY wisely. I call myself a theist because I do believe in a God.

I agree, and I'm Christian. There are many flawed people out there. Atheist and Christian. I'm sure she thought she was helping. She certainly should try to read the bible more. I don't think that's what Jesus would have said to you.

I'll just say this; The best person to talk to about atheism, is a previously very-committed atheist. Check this out:

I believe that it all depends on what you think. That woman who recently died (if she was an atheist) wouldn't be sorry now. (well... probably not). And I'll tell you why I think that; even if there really truly is a god in heaven, then I believe that he would accept people into heaven. If god is supposed to be so forgiving and loving, then he should let everyone into heaven. I believe that as long as that girl who just died was a good person, then she will be in heaven. If she is in heaven why would she be sorry? She wouldn't. From what I know of god and heaven, god seems like a kind and nice person, and heaven seems like a nice place. If god really is nice, then he would let this girl into heaven. ( I believe god would anyway).

Yeah, that's not right. The Bible describes Hell as a place of fire and brimstone, where there is "weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth." That is absolutely nothing to seriously laugh about, especially considering that if one of us were there, we wouldn't be laughing. It's extremely judgemental and harsh, and a Christian should never do something like that. Doing that also discredits the simple Gospel of Jesus Christ, seeing we are commanded to love our neighbors. It reflects badly on Christians and will lead some to draw the conclusion that Christians are hypocrites.
It's not funny at all.

As a Christian she believes that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, and that it is appointed once for people to die and then the judgment. So what seemed judgmental to you was really a statement of faith for her. If you think someone is judgmental and harsh and you believe this is wrong, are you not being judgmental. Please practice what YOU preach. Jesus commanded us to make righteous judgments that fit with the Word of God.

I might say something like that. I have been known to open my mouth before I put my brain in gear.

But, ya know? The dead woman is still dead. Whatever is said about her isn't going to hurt her any more.

Eh, not really, religion is mostly a straight-forward answer, you either highly believe or highly disbelieve, and you usually don't think twice when talking about it.

Im an atheist, btw

I don't think it's judgemental b/c she's not JUDGING the atheist woman that died. Yes, it might be a bit harsh, but it's the truth...she believes now. It's sad though, that we know where she is, and it's not w/ God.

EDIT: Btw, I wouldn't have said it.

i think you should choose how you refer to yourself a little more wisely.
For example: Theism is the belief in the existence of one or more Gods or deities.
Judgemental, no, not really. i think she was just stating something based upon her beliefs.
