I just got a little baby shitzu. Louie is 11 weeks old. when he is laying on me or just falling asleep he makes an odd sund threw his nose. It's almost as if hes trying to blow his nose or hes having trouble breathing. Now my mother and her BF smoke. I know this can't be good for the little guy and it makes me very upset. Why do you think he would be making these kinds of noises. I have heard hey make noises like this but I'm not sure. Please HELP!

Your little doggie probably has really small nasal openings and the smoke does affect breathing also. I use to smoke near my cat and she was having a hard time breathing, well, I did stop and guess what -- all better for her now. Good luck!

Typically, I would look at the frequency of the noises. Does it happen every single time she lays on you or falls asleep? If so, she could be laying wrong, and forcing herself to breathe harder, which would sound like that. Has she had all of her shots? Regular Veterinary visits are very important. The fact that your mother and her BF smoke, may cause some sinus build up, but smoking rarely affects domesticated animals. Smoking has been determined to cause cancer in humans, however, most domestic animals do not live long enough to develop the same sort of cancer from smoking related exposure. You have to understand that the immune system in most animals is different, because they are used to "not so sanitary" living. If you think about it, dogs eat out of the garbage. If you were to do that, you would most likely develop a nasty case of Food Born Illness. Dogs do not. Dogs eat poop, again, if you were to do that. I would bring it to the attention of your veterinarian, and if you cannot afford one, then maybe you should think about giving the dog to someone who can. Taking on a pet is a very serious obligation, and can be very expensive. I just dumped out $250 for 4 kitties for their annual vaccines. I would venture to say that your dog probably just has some sinus build up, maybe related to a previous injury, and the nose has not set right.

I've taken in two shih tzus at differnt times. They both seemed to make weird noises. They grunt and make half sneezing noises. I think it could be perfectly normal.
