Claritin makes me angry and irritable, also feeling "speedy." Have not tried Allegra, don't like Singulair's side effects. Have a combination of severe asthma and allergies. Thanks!

Alavert is a great allergy medicine that doesn't knock you out and it's not going to give you a 'speedy' effect...they give it to children as young as 2. Walgreens has a generic of this drug called Wal-Vert.

I know what you mean about benadryl and claritin because they do the same thing to me. I had a violent allergic reaction to Singulair and cannot take it. However, I love my Allegra even though I only take it at night. It does make me drowsy but no where near as bad as the benadryl did and doesn't leave me with the hung over affect that benadryl does either. My allergist also just perscribed doxepin which helps me sleep, and provides a long term histamine blocker as well.

I like Zyrtec.

When you say that Claritin makes you angry and irritable...did you take Claritin or Claritin-D? The claritin D is an antihistamine/decongestant. Decongestants are known for making people feel like they're on speed...they're the key ingredient in crystal meth. You might want to double check to make sure you only took the antihistamine version of Claritin. It's my second choice when Zyrtec gets too expensive.

Ahhhh good ole Benadryl. Look at the active ingredients in Benadryl and go to the pharmacy and look at the active ingredient in sleeping aids (sleeping pills) it's the same ingredient!

Other medications that have worked for me are Reactin and Allegra. I've used others but usually stick to Reactin.

Take care and good luck, everyone is different keep trying and you'll find something suitable.

I have really bad allergies over the counters did not work for me. I went to the doctor and he prescribed me a nasal spray called rhinovent or something like that. It works super good since I started which was saturday My allergies have not effected me at all. as of yet I have had no side effects at all. In addition It's very light and I don't get any of that nasty nasal effect that affrin and other nasal sprays give. Talk to a doc!

I agree with you - I don't like Benedryl either. The absolute best thing I have found is Flonase. It's a prescription spray, and since I started using it, my incidence of sinus infections and allergic reactions has fallen DRAMATICALLY. It's not cheap, but now it *is* available as a generic, which helps. Contact your doctor about getting a prescrition.

Have you tried Reactine? Its pretty good and I have found no side effects with it.

I have used Benadryl and found that after a while the dosiness went away. They also make it lower stength.

Good luck

Zicam is the best for anything related to cold or allergies. I have a whole box of them because my x boyfriend works where he can get them free if they fall off packing and get damaged. It is a little expensive, but it definately works. Its like $8.99 for a box of any kind of Zicam.
