I want to get a bird, but not right now. I want a bird like my sisters (Indian Ring Neck), but she said it is hard to get a bird to be that loving. I want a bird that can talk, but is not any smaller than a Ring Neck. My sister said get a African Grey. I want a bird that is kinda big and can talk. HELP me to choose if I should get what kind of bird!!

An African Grey can be a loving and very talkative Medium sized bird. However, many claim that Grey's can be very sensitive, especially to change. Mine is adaptable although I got her when she was six weeks old and brought her home at 4 months. The younger you get your bird the easier it is to train them to adapt to your lifestyle, since they no nothing else. They MUST have attention everyday. They get bored easily and must always have toys and have their intelligence challenged. Mine is seven months old and can identify colors, sizes and shapes. It makes her so happy to please me. She loves to sit on my shoulder, close to my head and give me kisses. I couldn't be happier with my choice. REMEMBER, they say that the average Grey will live with 7 different owners in it's lifetime. That is just wrong. If you choose to get a bird, it becomes a member of your family, it should stay with you as long as you or your bird lives. An African Grey lives as long as a human if cared for properly. Thank carefully, are you willing to make a lifetime commitment? Once you are part of her flock she will expect you with her always and learn to depend on YOU for love, food, protection and security. You will benefit greatly as well.

Ring Necks are great, and further, they are great for first birds. Grey's are ridiculously intelligent, and therefore require a whole lot of your time, even when you don't necessarily have that time to give them.

I'm not turning you against Greys, or at least that's not my aim. What you should do is go find a place that has several birds, and once you're there, spend a couple of hours socializing with the birds. You'll figure out which ones steal your heart. My list of favorite birds keeps growing, but Macaws top it, hands down. Ringnecks are cool because they're so laid back and they pretty much go with the flow. I've never met a ringneck that had problems so severe that their owners couldn't handle them. Greys, I have.

Good luck!

Birds are great. I have a cockatiel. He is about 19 years old now. Large birds live a long time, most likely longer than their human owner. Many people have to put their birds (parrots) in their will so someone can take care of it when they die. If you are willing to make such a commitment to take care of a large bird like that, go for it. But if it is something you want to do spur of the moment because you are maybe bored- it would not be fair to the bird in the long run.

An African Grey would be perfect for everything you want. But make sure you are ready to put forth a lot of time and effort. Birds are wonderful, but they are a big responsibility.

I think you should only get a bird if you have the time and patience. birds need alot of attention if you want them to be loving. the bigger the bird is the more mess, birds poop alot. i have two cockatiels and only one is loving the other is older and i didnt give it the amount of attention it needed. but i would get either a cockatiel or a cockatoo. i've heard that cockatoos are very affectionate and do get attached to their owners.
