I'm just curious what people think. A caveat is that the lion does not get a suprise attack. In a face to face confrontation, who wins and why?

I think the lion would win the fight. Intelligence would only help with tool usage in that kind of fight. But gorillas hardly ever use cudgels, or even rocks for smashing.
The lion has hunting instinct in place of intelligence. Although the claws and teeth would have to strike many times, it would need next to no room to do its damage. So even if the gorilla did grab it and give it the beat down, the lion would keep on clawing and drawing blood--digging into the gorilla's muscles and tendons, and disabling it long before it bled to death. The gorilla less likely has a disabling blow.

I saw a matchup of the Siberian Tiger vs. the Kodiac bear on Discovery's animal duel, and the Bear wasted the tiger. But the gorilla is the same size as the lion (the Kodiak is about 3X the size) and has no claws (Kodiak's are 9 inches.)

The lion takes the day.

Discovery use to have a show like this, but I dont think a lion was ever paired against a gorilla. Although a gorilla has superior intelligence and has super strength the gorilla would not win unless the gorilla thinks to use something as a weapon. The lion is much faster, and has 2 built in weapons besides its strength.....claws and a long powerful jaw. Also Lions are carnivores and regulary hunt for there food, where gorillas eat plants and insects and do not rely on hunting. Hands down Lion!

That's tough, but I'd say gorilla for the same reason I'd
say grizzly bear would beat a lion. Use of a very powerful
hand attack. Once the lion gripped on, the gorilla can pound
him with his fists and knock him unconscious. They can hit
VERY hard.

Arms rule!!!

Hmmm, that's a doozie of a question.

I think the silverback would win hands down. It may be a bit ragged after the fight, but definately the silverback.

It would have sheer strength and weight over the lion. The reach is longer than the lions, but the lion is quicker.

The lion relies on the pack to bring down an animal and it is mainly the females who hunt. 60% to 70% of a lions diet is carrion. The male never hunts his own food, that's left to the females and if the male is on his own, then most likely he will be a carrion scavenger.

The silverback, although not carnivores have very large teeth which can inflict deadly damage.

A cheetah might want to run first somewhat than attack. even though it may not run quick for lengthy as they do no longer have a intense stamina. The gorilla might want to quickly tire the cheetah out and finally seize up with it. Cheetah are somewhat no longer that solid compared to an individual silverback, so that they silverback might want to somewhat overpower the cheetah.
