I don't believe it's by using "System Restore," since that just goes back to a restore point. Does anyone know how to make my computer go back to when it was just-out-of-the-box? A lot of my programs aren't working; I think it's viruses or spyware, but I've run scans with many different spyware/anti-virus programs that don't pick up anything. Since I don't have any vital files, I'd like to know how to restore my system to its original settings. Help is much appreciated!

Try using a ghost image software.

If you are using the usual off-the-shelf model of PC with an OEM version of Windows (as opposed to owning your own copy of XP), you'll need to follow the manufacturer's instructions on performing a "system recovery", which will reload Windows and any other applications which were installed at the time of purchase. Usually this will be stored on a disc-image somewhere on a secure partition on your drive.

Now there are many different options for running a System reovery - without knowing the specific manufacturer and model of your computer it is impossible to advise as to the exact method for your computer. There are however two main methods used.

One is via a recovery disc. If your manufacturer supplied you with one, you will need to insert the disc and reboot. Watch at start-up, as you may have to select a "boot from cd" option.

The other common option is to add a "recovery" option to your boot option - if this is the case, re-boot and take careful note of the options available as your system boots.

If it is neither of these, you will need to refer to your manufacturer for further guidance.

Just be sure to back-up any valuable data/files before performing a system recovery, as ALL your files will be erase. And if you have the option, perform a "destructive" install, which will fully re-format your hard-drive before performing a fresh install of windows

The best method would be to perform a system recovery with the Cd's supplied with your computer.
